Welcome to the Network: Yoga Kawa

Welcome to the network, Yoga Kawa. We're delighted to have this Toronto yoga school join the directory as a listed school, and we're glad to introduce the people behind it to our community.
Yoga Kawa is the home of the Ascendent Yoga Teacher Training, a program built around the idea that teaching is more than repeating sequences. It brings together ancient wisdom, modern science, and lived experience to reshape how you move, how you listen, and how you lead. Here is a closer look at the founder behind it.
Finding Yoga, and Finding the Wish to Share It
The founder's practice began in 2008. "I found yoga in 2008, at a point when I needed something that slowed me down and brought me back into my body." What began as a way to feel better didn't stay small for long. In the founder's words, "What started as a way to feel better quickly became the thing I couldn’t imagine my week without."
The turning point came far from home. "Teaching travellers on a beach in Goa is when I realized I didn’t just want to practice yoga, I wanted to share it."
Building the Space That Was Missing
Back in Toronto, the founder went looking for a particular kind of room and couldn't find it. "After Goa, I came home to Toronto and couldn’t find the kind of space I’d been looking for: welcoming, unpretentious, and open to everyone."
So the founder built it. "So in 2017 we started Yoga Kawa. It began with corporate and community classes, grew into animal-assisted yoga across the GTA, and now includes our own studio and teacher training."
That growth shows in the teacher training. Through guided study, embodied practice, and direct mentorship, trainees build confidence in their teaching voice. They also learn why yoga works, not only how it looks. Graduates are prepared to teach in studios, corporate wellness settings, community spaces, and beyond.
The Part Most People Never See
Anyone who runs a studio or a training knows the calm in the room is often held up by a lot of work behind it. The founder puts it plainly: "Holding space for everyone while running a business behind the scenes. On the mat, my job is to be calm and present. Off the mat, it’s schedules, logistics, live animals, and a hundred decisions a day. The hardest part is making sure none of that ever shows up in the room."
It's an honest picture of what it means to lead in this field. The practice you offer and the business that sustains it are both real work, and they depend on each other.
What People Take With Them
When asked what students should feel when they leave, the answer was a single word. "Lighter." The founder went on: "I want people to walk out feeling more at home in their bodies and a little more connected, to themselves and to the people around them. If someone came in stressed and leaves smiling, that’s the whole point."
Advice for Anyone Just Beginning
For anyone considering their own practice or their own business, the founder offers encouragement: "Start before you feel ready. Your first class doesn’t need to be graceful, and your first business idea doesn’t need to be perfect. Show up consistently, stay curious, and let your practice teach you patience, because you’ll need plenty of it. And remember why you started. On the hard days, that reason is what keeps you going."
