About

The Yoga for Runners Workshop at Oxygen Yoga West End was created to serve Vancouver's enormous and passionate running community — a city where the Seawall, Stanley Park trails, and mountain runs are daily rituals for thousands of residents. This two-hour workshop provides runners with yoga tools that directly improve their running experience.

The workshop is led by a teacher with deep expertise in both yoga and running, who understands the specific biomechanical demands that running places on the body and how targeted yoga practice can address them. This dual expertise ensures that every technique taught has direct application to running performance and injury prevention.

The session begins with an analysis of the most common areas of tightness and imbalance in runners: hip flexors, hamstrings, IT band, calves, ankles, and the muscles of the lower back and shoulders. Understanding why these areas become problematic in runners provides context for the yoga sequences that follow.

Hip opening sequences form a substantial portion of the workshop, as hip tightness is implicated in many common running injuries including IT band syndrome, knee pain, and lower back pain. Participants learn a progression of hip openers that range from gentle and accessible to deep and challenging, allowing each person to work at their appropriate level.

Hamstring and IT band release techniques use a combination of Yin-style long holds and active stretching to address the chronic shortening that occurs with regular running. These techniques are particularly valuable for marathon trainers who accumulate significant mileage.

Core strengthening work focuses not on aesthetic abs but on the deep stabilizing muscles — transverse abdominis, multifidus, pelvic floor — that maintain running posture and protect the spine during long runs. Breathing techniques adapted from pranayama practice improve respiratory efficiency and help runners manage effort during hill climbs and speed work.

The workshop culminates in participants learning a complete 20-minute yoga-for-runners routine that can be practiced at home before or after runs. This takeaway routine is designed to be practical and sustainable — short enough to actually use regularly, comprehensive enough to make a real difference in flexibility, recovery, and injury prevention.

The workshop runs quarterly and is timed to coincide with major Vancouver running events including the BMO Vancouver Marathon, the Sun Run, and fall marathon training cycles.
