About
The Yoga Anatomy Deep Dive workshop offers a rare and valuable opportunity to understand the biological foundations of yoga practice, transforming how participants relate to their own bodies and approach their practice. This full-day (6 hour) intensive is designed for both yoga teachers seeking to enhance their anatomical knowledge and dedicated practitioners who want to understand why their body responds to yoga the way it does.
The workshop is led by a yoga teacher with a background in physiotherapy, bringing a clinical understanding of human movement that goes far beyond what is typically covered in yoga teacher training programs. This dual expertise allows for teaching that is both scientifically rigorous and directly applicable to yoga practice.
The day is organized around the major joint systems that are most relevant to yoga practice. The morning session focuses on the spine and hips — the two areas that most significantly affect yoga practice and are most commonly involved in yoga injuries. Participants learn about spinal anatomy, intervertebral disc mechanics, and how individual spinal curvature affects forward folds, backbends, and twists. Hip anatomy is explored in depth, including the crucial concept of skeletal variation — how the shape of the femoral head and acetabulum varies dramatically between individuals, creating fundamentally different ranges of motion that no amount of stretching can change.
The afternoon session covers the shoulders, knees, and wrists. Shoulder anatomy is particularly relevant for practitioners working with arm balances, inversions, and Chaturanga — the workshop provides clear biomechanical guidance on protecting these vulnerable joints. Knee anatomy focuses on the relationship between hip and ankle mobility and knee safety, debunking common myths about knee alignment in poses like Warrior and Pigeon. Wrist anatomy addresses the substantial loads placed on wrists in modern yoga practice and strategies for building capacity and preventing injury.
Throughout the day, anatomical models and projected images complement hands-on exploration. Partner exercises allow participants to feel anatomical landmarks, observe movement patterns, and experience how anatomical variation manifests in real bodies. These experiential elements ensure that the learning goes beyond intellectual understanding into embodied knowledge.
Key takeaways include: understanding why certain poses may never be accessible based on individual bone structure (and why that is perfectly fine), how to modify poses based on individual anatomy rather than generic modifications, the difference between muscular tension (which can be changed) and skeletal limitation (which cannot), and how to recognize the early warning signs of common yoga injuries.
For yoga teachers, this workshop fundamentally changes how they observe and instruct students. Understanding skeletal variation, for example, transforms a teacher's relationship with poses like Lotus, Pigeon, and deep squats — positions where forcing a universal alignment ideal can lead to serious injury.
