About

The Yin Yoga & Sound Bath Workshop at Modo Yoga East Vancouver has evolved into one of the city's most cherished wellness experiences, drawing practitioners who seek a level of relaxation and release that goes beyond what a standard yoga class can offer. Held bi-weekly in the studio's tranquil practice space, this two-hour immersion combines two powerful healing modalities into a single transformative experience.

The workshop opens with a brief centering practice — seated breathing and a guided body scan that helps participants arrive fully in the present moment and release the day's accumulated tension. This transition is essential preparation for the deep stillness that Yin yoga requires.

The Yin sequence is carefully designed to systematically open the body's major fascial lines while stimulating the energy meridians recognized in traditional Chinese medicine. Poses target the hips, spine, shoulders, and neck — areas where most people hold chronic tension. Each pose is held for 3-5 minutes, allowing time for the connective tissues to gradually release and lengthen in ways that are impossible to achieve through shorter holds.

As participants settle into each Yin pose, the sound practitioner introduces the healing tones of crystal singing bowls, Tibetan bowls, chimes, and other instruments. These instruments produce rich overtones and vibrations that are both heard and physically felt in the body. The sound waves enhance the Yin practice by deepening relaxation, reducing mental chatter, and creating subtle energetic shifts that many participants describe as profoundly moving.

The combination of Yin and sound is more than the sum of its parts. The stillness and surrender of Yin yoga creates a receptive state in which the body and nervous system are particularly responsive to sound vibration. Participants frequently report experiences of deep emotional release, vivid imagery, and states of consciousness that blur the boundary between waking and sleeping.

The workshop concludes with a final Savasana accompanied by the most immersive section of the sound bath, allowing the combined effects of the practice to integrate fully. Participants are then guided gently back to full awareness, often sitting in appreciative silence before the group disperses.

This workshop is genuinely accessible to all levels, including complete beginners. Props are provided generously to support the body in each pose, and the facilitation style emphasizes comfort and individual adaptation over achieving specific shapes.
