About
The Partner Yoga & AcroYoga Workshop brings one of yoga's most social and playful practices to Vancouver's stunning outdoor spaces, creating a weekly summer gathering that builds community, trust, and smiles in equal measure. Running every Saturday morning from May through September, the workshop has become a beloved fixture of Vancouver's warm-weather wellness calendar.
AcroYoga combines elements of yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage into a partner practice that is equal parts challenging, therapeutic, and joyful. The workshop makes this practice accessible to complete beginners while offering progression pathways for returning participants who want to develop more advanced skills.
Every session begins with a partner warm-up sequence that introduces the fundamental skills of communication, trust, and physical awareness that underpin all AcroYoga practice. Partners practice calibrated weight-sharing, learn to give clear verbal feedback, and develop the proprioceptive awareness needed for safely supporting another person's body.
The therapeutic flying component is often participants' favourite discovery. In therapeutic flying, the base (person on the ground) uses their legs to lift the flyer into gentle inversions and supported stretches that provide extraordinary spinal decompression and nervous system calming. Many participants report that therapeutic flying delivers deeper relaxation than any other practice they have experienced.
Acrobatic elements progress from foundational poses like Front Bird (where the flyer balances belly-down on the base's feet) through intermediate positions including Throne, Whale, and Star. Each pose is taught with proper spotting technique, ensuring safety while encouraging participants to challenge themselves and build confidence.
A key feature of the workshop is its partner rotation format. No partner is required to attend, and participants are paired and rotated throughout the session. This structure builds community, exposes participants to different body types and skill levels, and ensures that everyone — regardless of size, strength, or experience — gets to practice both basing and flying.
The outdoor setting in Vancouver's parks adds immeasurably to the experience. Sunset Beach offers ocean views and the sounds of waves. Kitsilano Beach provides the backdrop of the North Shore mountains. Queen Elizabeth Park offers garden settings and city panoramas. The natural light, fresh air, and open space create a festive, communal atmosphere that draws curious onlookers who frequently join in.
The workshop attracts a diverse mix of participants — yoga practitioners, dancers, circus artists, climbers, couples, and anyone drawn to movement and play. This diversity enriches the experience and reflects AcroYoga's core philosophy that shared physical practice builds trust and connection across all boundaries.
