About

The Introduction to Meditation Weekend workshop addresses a common challenge in Vancouver's wellness community: many people know they want to meditate, understand the benefits, and have perhaps tried meditation apps or YouTube videos, but have not been able to establish a consistent, meaningful practice. This workshop provides the structured introduction, direct guidance, and practical tools needed to bridge the gap between intention and daily practice.

Hosted by Yoga Outreach — an organization known for making yoga and meditation accessible to all — the workshop runs over two half-day Saturday and Sunday sessions. This weekend format allows for substantial practice time while accommodating busy schedules.

Day One focuses on foundations. The morning begins with an overview of meditation's scientific evidence base — stress reduction, improved focus, emotional regulation, cardiovascular benefits — providing motivational context for the practice. Participants then learn and practice two foundational techniques: mindfulness meditation (present-moment awareness using the breath as an anchor) and body scan meditation (systematic awareness of physical sensations from head to feet).

Each technique is practiced in multiple sessions of increasing duration, starting with just five minutes and building to twenty. Between practice sessions, the facilitator leads discussions about the experience — what arose, what was challenging, what was surprising — normalizing the common difficulties that cause many beginners to abandon meditation before it takes hold.

Day Two introduces breath awareness meditation (focused attention on specific breathing patterns) and loving-kindness meditation (systematic cultivation of compassion toward self and others). These techniques expand the practitioner's toolkit, providing options for different moods, needs, and circumstances.

Practical instruction on establishing a home practice is a major focus throughout the weekend. Topics include choosing a practice time and space, determining optimal session length for beginners, working with the inevitable resistance and excuses that arise, and integrating brief mindfulness moments into daily activities like commuting, eating, and walking.

The workshop addresses common obstacles with specificity and humor — restlessness, sleepiness, racing thoughts, physical discomfort, and the persistent feeling of doing it wrong are all explored as normal parts of the meditation journey rather than signs of failure.

Participants leave with substantial take-home materials including guided audio recordings of each technique, a suggested 30-day practice plan with graduated session lengths, and a reading list for those who want to explore further. The workshop's secular framing makes it accessible to people of all backgrounds and belief systems.
