The Ashtanga Primary Series Masterclass at Ashtanga Yoga Vancouver provides dedicated practitioners with an opportunity to study the traditional sequence in extraordinary detail, gaining insights that transform and deepen their daily practice. Held monthly, this three-hour intensive has become an essential supplement to regular Mysore practice for Vancouver's committed Ashtanga community.

The masterclass is led by authorized Ashtanga teachers who have spent significant time studying at the source in Mysore, India. This direct lineage connection ensures that the instruction reflects the authentic method as taught by the Jois family, while the teachers' experience working with Western students provides practical understanding of how the method must be intelligently adapted for different body types and physical histories.

The session begins with the traditional opening chant and a thorough warm-up of Surya Namaskara A and B (sun salutations), with detailed attention to the breath-movement synchronization (vinyasa) that defines the Ashtanga method. Even experienced practitioners often discover refinements in their sun salutations that have significant downstream effects on the rest of the sequence.

The standing sequence and seated sequence of the Primary Series are then worked through systematically, with extended time at key postures for detailed instruction. The teachers explain the therapeutic logic behind the sequence — why poses appear in their specific order, how each posture prepares the body for what follows, and what the intended physical, energetic, and psychological effects are.

Alignment instruction goes beyond superficial shape-making to address the internal actions that define each posture: bandha engagement (mula bandha and uddiyana bandha), specific drishti (gaze points) for each pose, and the relationship between breath and movement. Participants learn to feel these internal actions rather than simply understanding them intellectually.

Individual corrections are a highlight of the masterclass format. With extended time at each posture, teachers can provide hands-on adjustments and personalized feedback that address each participant's specific challenges and growth edges. This level of individual attention is rarely available in regular group classes.

The masterclass also addresses the common sticking points that practitioners encounter in the Primary Series — difficult transitions, challenging postures, and the psychological resistance that certain poses can provoke. Practical strategies for working with these obstacles are discussed and practiced.

Participants leave with a clearer mental map of the complete Primary Series, refined alignment awareness, and specific practice points to focus on in their daily Mysore practice.
