About
The Arm Balance & Inversion Workshop at YYoga Downtown Flow has become one of Vancouver's most popular yoga workshops, drawing practitioners who are ready to overcome the physical and psychological barriers that stand between them and going upside down. Held monthly at the Burrard Street studio, this three-hour intensive provides the focused instruction and supported practice that is impossible to achieve in a regular group class.
The workshop begins with a thorough warm-up designed specifically to prepare the body for arm-bearing and inverted postures. This includes targeted activation of the core, shoulders, and wrists — the key areas that must be both strong and properly engaged for safe arm balancing and inversion practice.
Instruction follows a progressive structure, starting with foundational arm balances such as Crow Pose (Bakasana) and building toward more challenging postures including Side Crow, Flying Pigeon, and Eight-Angle Pose. Each pose is broken down into its component actions — where to place the hands, how to engage the core, where to direct the gaze, and how to find the tipping point where the pose takes flight.
Inversion instruction covers Headstand (Sirsasana), Forearm Stand (Pincha Mayurasana), and Handstand (Adho Mukha Vrksasana). The teaching approach emphasizes wall work, partner assists, and progressive drills that build the specific strength and proprioception needed for free-standing balance. Special attention is given to the psychology of inversions — understanding and managing the fear response that naturally arises when we turn upside down.
Throughout the workshop, senior YYoga teachers circulate to provide hands-on assistance, individual feedback, and encouragement. This level of personal attention is one of the workshop's greatest strengths, allowing participants to attempt poses they would not safely try without support.
The workshop concludes with a cool-down sequence focusing on wrist release, shoulder opening, and nervous system settling. Participants leave with a clear understanding of the preparation, technique, and practice strategies needed to continue developing their arm balance and inversion practice independently.
The workshop is offered monthly and frequently sells out. Early registration is recommended. No prior inversion experience is required, but participants should have a consistent yoga practice and be comfortable with basic standing poses and sun salutations.
