About

Ashtanga Yoga Vancouver holds a distinguished position in the city's yoga landscape as a center of authentic, lineage-based Ashtanga practice. Founded in 2000 by Fiona Stang after her transformative studies in Mysore, India with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath Rangaswamy, the studio has been a home for dedicated Ashtanga practitioners for over two decades.

Fiona's credentials are exceptional in the yoga world. She first traveled to Mysore in 1999 and received authorization to teach from Pattabhi Jois in 2000. In 2009, she was among the first group of just 40 students worldwide to receive Level 2 Authorization, a distinction that reflects the depth of her practice and her teacher's trust in her ability to transmit the tradition faithfully.

The studio's primary offering is the traditional Mysore-style program, a unique and deeply personal approach to yoga practice. In Mysore-style classes, students work through the Ashtanga sequence at their own pace, receiving one-on-one guidance, hands-on adjustments, and personalized instruction from the teaching team. New postures are introduced gradually as students demonstrate readiness, creating a progressive and sustainable path of development. This format is remarkably inclusive despite Ashtanga's reputation for rigor; complete beginners and advanced practitioners share the same room, each working at their appropriate level.

Beyond daily Mysore classes, Ashtanga Yoga Vancouver offers led primary and intermediate series classes, foundation workshops for newcomers, and periodic intensive programs that deepen understanding of the practice. The studio regularly hosts visiting teachers from the global Ashtanga community, providing students with exposure to different perspectives within the tradition.

The studio space at 1385 West 6th Avenue is purposefully simple and focused, reflecting the Ashtanga emphasis on internal experience over external decoration. The room is well-maintained and equipped with the essentials needed for practice, allowing students to turn their attention inward without distraction.

Pricing is straightforward, with drop-in classes at $30 and a four-class package available for $90. Workshops are typically priced at $100 individually or $175 for a two-workshop package. The studio maintains a small and dedicated community of practitioners who value the authenticity, discipline, and transformative potential of traditional Ashtanga yoga.
