Yoga Outreach Teacher Training

Yoga Outreach Teacher Training represents a fundamentally different approach to yoga education, one centered on service, social justice, and the healing potential of yoga for communities that are often excluded from mainstream wellness spaces. Based in Vancouver and operating as a registered charity since 2009, Yoga Outreach has become a national model for trauma-informed yoga programming.

The training program is designed for yoga practitioners who are called to use their practice as a tool for community service. While it covers essential teaching competencies including asana, sequencing, and class management, the curriculum places equal emphasis on specialized skills rarely addressed in conventional teacher training programs.

Trauma-informed teaching methodology forms the backbone of the program. Students learn to recognize the physiological and psychological impacts of trauma, understand how yoga can support nervous system regulation, and develop teaching approaches that prioritize choice, consent, and safety. This includes language patterns that empower rather than direct, the use of invitational cueing, and strategies for managing triggered responses in a class setting.

Cultural humility and accessibility modules challenge trainees to examine their own assumptions and privileges, preparing them to work respectfully and effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Students learn to adapt standard yoga practices for people in chairs, in beds, in small spaces, and with limited mobility or physical challenges.

The practicum component is where the training becomes truly transformative. Trainees are placed in community partner sites including shelters, recovery centers, hospitals, and community organizations, where they lead supervised classes for real clients. This experience builds not only teaching skills but also the emotional resilience and compassion needed for this demanding and deeply rewarding work.
