About
The Salt Spring Centre of Yoga Teacher Training is one of British Columbia's most established and distinctive yoga education programs, rooted in over four decades of continuous operation on Salt Spring Island. The Centre's 70-acre property, nestled among old-growth forests and organic gardens, provides an extraordinary setting for deep yoga study.
Founded in 1981, the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga operates as an ashram-inspired community that lives and breathes yoga year-round. This is not a studio that also offers teacher training — it is a dedicated yoga community whose teacher training program emerges organically from decades of committed practice and teaching.
The 200-hour residential program is structured as a series of intensive retreats spread over several months. During each intensive, students live at the Centre, following a daily schedule that includes early morning meditation, asana practice, philosophy lectures, teaching methodology workshops, and karma yoga (selfless service). Vegetarian meals are prepared communally using produce from the Centre's organic gardens, embodying the yoga principle of ahimsa (non-harming).
The curriculum follows the classical eight-limbed path of Ashtanga yoga, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding yoga as a complete way of life rather than simply a physical exercise. Asana training covers traditional Hatha postures with emphasis on alignment, breath integration, and the therapeutic application of poses. Pranayama (breath science) receives substantial attention, with students developing a personal pranayama practice alongside learning to teach breathing techniques.
Philosophy studies are woven throughout the program, drawing from the Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita, and the Centre's own lineage teachings. The residential format allows philosophical concepts to be explored not just intellectually but experientially, as students navigate community living and discover how yoga philosophy applies to daily life.
The island setting itself becomes a teacher, offering pristine natural beauty, a slower pace of life, and a community of like-minded seekers. Many graduates describe the Salt Spring training as a life-changing experience that goes far beyond professional certification.
