About

Yasodhara Ashram stands as one of North America's most significant and enduring yoga communities, offering a depth of practice and sincerity of purpose that is rare in the contemporary yoga landscape. Founded in 1963 by Swami Sivananda Radha, a pioneering figure in bringing yoga to the West, the ashram occupies a beautiful lakeside property in the peaceful Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia.

The ashram's approach to yoga is distinctive and deeply reflective. While Hatha yoga is practiced daily, the emphasis is not on physical achievement but on using all aspects of yoga as tools for self-understanding and personal growth. Programs integrate asana with dream interpretation, mantra practice, reflective journaling, and the study of Swami Radha's teachings, creating a multifaceted approach to self-exploration.

Retreat offerings span a broad spectrum, from introductory weekends designed for newcomers to extended programs of a month or more for dedicated seekers. The Yoga Development Course, a three-month intensive, is the ashram's flagship program and is considered one of the most transformative extended yoga programs available in North America.

The physical environment supports the inner work beautifully. The ashram sits on the shores of Kootenay Lake, surrounded by the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges. The centerpiece of the campus is the Temple of Light, an architecturally stunning prayer space designed to inspire contemplation and wonder. Practice spaces, accommodation, gardens, and communal areas are all thoughtfully designed to support the contemplative life.

Daily life at the ashram follows a structured rhythm of practice, service, and study. Residents and guests rise early for morning practice, participate in karma yoga throughout the day, attend workshops and teachings, and gather for evening meditation. Meals are vegetarian and prepared with care using produce from the ashram's gardens.

The resident community — a mix of long-term residents and shorter-term guests — creates a warm and supportive social environment. The culture is one of genuine inquiry, mutual support, and respect for each person's individual journey.

Yasodhara Ashram welcomes people of all backgrounds and belief systems, offering a space for anyone seeking greater self-awareness, clarity, and purpose. The ashram's six decades of continuous operation stand as testament to the enduring value of its approach.
